PhatWare has released a public beta of CalliGrapher 8.0, the next version of its handwriting recognition software for Pocket PCs.

CalliGrapher analyzes pen strokes written in any application window, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. It uses advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to make it more accurately interpret the user's handwriting.

CalliGrapher 8.0 adds a new method of entering handwritten data. Write Pad provides a specified area at the bottom of the screen where users can enter handwritten information that will be recognized and converted to digital text

Other changes include:

• Attachable and floating keyboard
• Extended CalliGrapher toolbar and Write Pad that occupies the entire width of the screen in landscape mode
• New color picker to select ink and pad colors
• Support for Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0

"We are pleased to unveil CalliGrapher 8.0 for Beta testing as user feedback is a key component to the developments we make," said PhatWare President Stan Miasnikov. "CalliGrapher 8.0 will keep PhatWare on the cutting edge supporting Microsoft technology and we look forward to the testers' response."

The latest version of CalliGrapher will run on devices with Windows Mobile 2003 or later.
