PhatWare has released CalliGrapher 8.0, the next version of its handwriting recognition software for Pocket PCs.
CalliGrapher analyzes pen strokes written in any application window, then converts them into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. It uses advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to make it more accurately interpret the user's handwriting.
CalliGrapher 8.0 adds a new method of entering handwritten data. Write Pad is a specified area at the bottom of the screen where users can enter handwritten information that will be recognized and converted to digital text.
The new version also includes a new Statistical Analyzer that learns the user's writing habits by accumulating information about the words the user writes over a period of time. When enough data is collected, this allows CalliGrapher to automatically fix common recognition errors based on the user's writing patterns.
Users can now switch between four recognition modes, including mixed cursive and print, upper case characters only, numbers only, and Internet addresses, for more accurate recognition.
The RiteCalc feature allows users to write simple mathematical formulas that CalliGrapher will solve.

"With the latest enhancements to CalliGrapher's handwriting recognition technology, CalliGrapher 8.0 delivers a powerful, compelling way professionals can capture information on their Windows Mobile 5.0-based Pocket PCs," said Chris Hill, group product manager, Windows Mobile and Embedded Devices Division at Microsoft.
The latest version of CalliGrapher will run on devices with Windows Mobile 2003 or later, including Windows Mobile 5.0.
The software can be purchased from the PhatWare web site for $39.95.
Owners of previous versions can upgrade to CalliGrapher 8.0 for $24.95.
