WebLink Wireless has been demonstrating at trade shows a handheld that uses Palm OS 5 and runs on the ReFLEX wireless network. So far, the device the company has been showing has had a monochrome screen.
A spokesperson now says that the company had a change of plans about two weeks ago. It has dropped the monochrome version and now says it is going to release one with a color screen.
This will be direct competitor for Research in Motion's BlackBerry wireless devices. Both have quite similar features, including always-on connections and built-in keyboards. However, there isn't a Blackberry device with a color screen.
In addition, the H500 will have an integrated keyboard and 16 MB of memory. It will also include an SD slot. It is being designed by Korea's HuneTec.
WebLink Wireless says this device is expected to sell in the mid-$200 price range and be available in October or November.
The ReFLEX network is just for data, not voice, and it doesn't provide very high bandwidth. However, it does offer "always on" access, wide coverage, and strong signals that easily penetrate the walls of office buildings. It uses Internet Protocol (IP), so devices utilizing the ReFLEX network have access to email and the Web. It is owned and operated by WebLink Wireless.
