In June, a Dell executive said his company would probably release a smart phone running Windows Mobile at some point in the future. Apparently, even these tenative plans have recently been dropped.
The Register is reporting being told by Dell's Chief Operating Officer Kevin Rollins that his company will not release a smart phone partially because it would have a hard time competing against Nokia.
However, that's not the only reason. Dell is successful in the PC market because of its direct sales model. This isn't possible in the smart phone arena as hardware makers must work through wireless service providers.
While Dell won't be releasing a smart phone, it still intends to add cellular wireless capabilities to its Axim Line of Pocket PCs.
Anthony Bonadero, Dell's director of wireless product marketing, told InfoWorld this summer that an upcoming member of the Axim Line will probably offer 802.11g, which is faster than 802.11b while being backwards compatible. It will also offer Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.
In addition, it will be able to connect to GSM/GPRS networks for voice and data. Dell says the device might also support CDMA.
Because Dell is working with Good Technologies, this Axim model will be able to access GoodLink email server software.
The model is expected to be released next year. It is not yet known what it will cost.
