First Glimpse of the Tungsten E2

An anonymous source has posted on the 1src Forums a brief description of the Tungsten E2. This will supposedly be the replacement for palmOne's mid-range handheld designed for business users.

This source appears to know a handheld developer with access to pre-release versions of palmOne handhelds. This is the same person who leaked the new details on the Tungsten T5.

Update: Belief is growing in the handheld community that this person is a hoaxer. Much of his plausibility was based on the very realistic picture he provided of the Tungsten T5. However, over the past couple of days many people have begun to question this image. In addition, a new source has come forward to say that the information posted in the 1src forums about the Tungsten E2 is false. To learn more, read this article.

Supposedly, the E2 will run Palm OS Cobalt on a 312 MHz Intel XScale processor, which is a faster processor than the Tungsten E uses. The upcoming model will have 64 MB RAM, twice what its predecessor does.

The E2 will reportedly include Bluetooth, but this source says its range will be limited to 2 meters. Why this is being done isn't clear, but it could be to reduce the strain on the device's battery. This model won't include Wi-Fi, but its SD slot might support palmOne's Wi-Fi SD card.

This model will include a 320-by-320-pixel (HiRes) display. While many were hoping this device would have a 320-by-480-pixel (HiRes+) screen, it's unlikely that a handheld at the Tungsten E2's expected price will have that high quality a screen.

It can be assumed that the E2 will have have roughly the same form factor as its predecessor, but the person who leaked this information to 1src did not give a physical description of this model.

Supposedly, the Tungsten E2 will not be released this fall. Instead, it will debut during the spring of 2005. The price will be roughly $250.

It should be pointed out that this leaked information has not been confirmed by palmOne, which has a policy of not discussing unreleased models.
