A number of Pocket PCs with VGA screens are expected to hit the market in the next few months. One of these is part of the Pocket Loox 700 series.
Although Fujitsu-Siemens has not yet announced these models, FirstLoox.org was recently leaked a full description of them.
Supposedly, there will be two models in this series, the 710 and 720. These will have a lot in common, but there will be a couple of significant differences. The 710 will include a QVGA screen, while the 720 will have a VGA screen and a built-in camera.
Both of these handhelds will run Windows Mobile 2003 and include Wi-Fi (802.11b) and Bluetooth (1.2). In fact, this series recently received approval from the Bluetooth Qualification Program. However, they haven't been given FCC approval, a necessity if they are going to be released in the U.S.
One of the ways The Pocket Loox 700 Series models will make use of their built-in Wi-Fi is for VoIP, which means they can be used to make telephone calls over the Internet.
Each of these handhelds will have a CompactFlash card slot and an SD slot that supports SDIO.
In addition, they will have USB 2.0 for fast connections to a PC. They will also be able to operate as a USB 1.1 host, which should allow them to use various USB peripherals, like keyboards, if drivers are available.
Wireless handhelds take a lot of power so the 700 series models will include swappable 1640 mAh batteries.
The 720 will reportedly have a 3.6-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 640 pixels (VGA).
It will have a 520 MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor and have 128 MB of RAM. It will also have an additional 28 MB of non-volatile internal storage.
The 720 will include a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash. This will be capable of capturing both still images and video.
This handheld will be 4.8 inches long, 2.8 inches wide, and .60 inches thick (122 mm by 72 mm by 15.2 mm). It will weigh approximately 6.2 ounces (175 g).
According to the information obtained by FirstLoox.org, the 710 will have a 240-by-320-pixel display that is 3.5 inches when measured diagonally.
It will have a 416 MHz PXA270 processor and 64 MB of RAM. It will also include the 28 MB of non-volatile internal storage.
This model will have almost the same dimensions as the 720 but it will be slightly thicker, 0.63 (16.1 mm).
The information given to FirstLoox.org indicates that these models are scheduled for release by Fujitsu-Siemens in August.
