Earlier this year, Gateway announced that it would release a Pocket PC this summer. And according to News.com, Gateway had already begun taking pre-orders from some of its large enterprise clients. However, today the company told Brighthand that it has "indefinitely delayed" this device.
Gateway first announced its plans back in May to enter the handheld computer market. Details of its upcoming device, the Gateway 100X Pocket PC, leaked out in early June, so Gateway went ahead and officially announced it on June 23. However, in late July the company announced that the device would be delayed until August, saying that it required more testing. However, today Gateway told Brighthand that its handheld has been "indefinitely delayed."
Asked whether the delay was related to technical problems with the device, which is being manufactured by Taiwan-based Lite-On Technology Corporation (its first PDA as well), a Gateway spokesperson said, "No, there weren't technical problems with the device. We simply missed our launch window and now we're focusing on other digital devices in light of the upcoming holiday season."
According to Gateway, it would miss the critical August to September launch window for consumer electronics and digital gear-related products. However, Gateway insisted that the device is not cancelled, just delayed.
The Gateway 100X would have run Windows Mobile 2003 on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor. It would have had 64 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM, a 3.5 inch transflective color screen, and dual expansion slots -- Compact Flash and Secure Digital. It was expected to cost between $300 and $350.
