Gateway Previews 100X Pocket PC

Gateway has officially announced its first handheld, which will run Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC.

In its official announcement the company gives few specifics about the device. However, company executives have already leaked most of the details. The Gateway 100X will be powered by an Intel XScale processor running at 400MHz and have 64M bytes of RAM and 32M bytes of ROM. It is not known at this point how much of this will be user accessible.

In addition, News.com was given access to a pre-release sample of this handheld, bringing new facts about it to light. Despite previous reports, the 100X has a transflective color screen, not a reflective one as earlier reported.

This model will offer dual expansion slots -- Compact Flash and Secure Digital. It will have a 1250 mAh removable Lithium-ion battery.

The 100X will be 5.11 by 3.07 by 0.71 inches (130 by 78 by 18 mm) and 6.52 ounces (185 g).

It is expected to be available in mid to late-July for between $300 and $350. News.com is predicting it will debut at $350 with a $50 mail-in rebate.

This is just the first Pocket PC to come for Gateway. According to Mr. Stinson, his company has plans to release more handhelds in the coming months with a variety of feature sets and price points.
