Palm, Inc. is well known as a maker of handhelds and smartphones. Now the company is going to start producing a third type of product, even though no one outside the company knows what it will be.
In an interview last year, Jeff Hawkins, Palm's co-founder, made a reference to his company's plans to create a mysterious third product category.
At the time, many people speculated that the interview had been done before the release of LifeDrive, and therefore Mr. Hawkins was referring to the Mobile Manager category, which Palm doesn't consider to be handhelds.
It seems this wasn't the case. In a recent Business 2.0 interview, Mr. Hawkins brings up the third new product category again.
As always, he refused to give any details, other than saying it will be a mobile device with advanced multimedia capabilities.
When asked for details on this mysterious product category during his interview last summer with Portland Business Journal, all Hawkins would say was:
It's possible the first of these devices might hit the market soon. Palm typically introduced new models in the spring and fall.
