Sprint PCS is now offering the Hitachi G1000 Pocket PC Phone, the first-ever Pocket PC with an integrated keyboard as well as one of the first Pocket PCs with a built-in digital camera.

Hitachi G1000 "The Hitachi G1000 is more than the sum of its parts. This combination of telecommunications, software capabilities and portable form factor provides a powerful, portable tool for today's communications users, wherever they may be on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network," said Shigeru Matsuoka, general manager of Hitachi's Mobile Information & Communication Appliance Division.

The G1000 uses an Intel XScale PXA255 processor running at 400 MHz. It has 32 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM. It runs Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition. There is no word yet of an upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003.

Its digital camera can take pictures at a maximum resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. It has a 3.5 inch color screen.

It has an SD card slot but this isn't SDIO compatible. It has a jog wheel but not a D-pad.

The G1000 is 5.8 by 3.3 by 0.9 inches. It weighs 8.4 ounces.

It will be able to place and receive phone calls and browse the Web at speeds averaging 50 to 70 Kbps, with peak speeds of 144 Kbps.

Hitachi says the removable Li-ion batery can power this device for up to 2.5 hours of talk time or up to 168 hours of standby time. Or it could give it about 12 hours of continuous handheld operation time.

Sprint PCS is offering the G1000 for $650.
