MultiMediaCard Specification 4.0 Will Bring Faster Cards

The MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) has released version 4.0 of the MultiMediaCard specification. Memory cards using this specification will have a much higher data transfer rate than current ones.

New features include a wider bus width with x1 bit, x4 bit and x8 bit options for faster data transfer at a given clock speed, ideal for cell phones and digital cameras. A higher clock frequency, with a new maximum of 52 MHz, allows a faster data transfer rate, up to 52 MB/sec., which represents a 20-fold improvement from the previous standards.

In addition, dual voltage operation is specified, for both 3.3 V and 1.8 V operations.

The new standard also includes backward compatibility paths for both legacy cards and host devices that accept MultiMediaCards in order to ensure a smooth transition from previous MMC standards.

The MMC standard is open and membership-driven. There are no royalties, and the specifications are easily available.

MMC cards are compatible with most Secure Digital (SD) slots used by handhelds, mobile phones, digital cameras, and other electronics. In fact, some devices have only MMC slots, which means they don't have to pay the extra cost of adding SD support.
