Motorola MPx200 Smart Phone Available for Free from Amazon

Amazon.com is currently offering Motorola's new MPx200 smart phone for free after a number of rebates available to those starting a new wireless service account.

The device itself costs $300, but Amazon.com will take $130 off the cost if an AT&T wireless service plan is purchased at the same time. In addition, Amazon is offering a $170 mail-in rebate to those who start a new one-year service contract with AT&T Wireless. Also, those who are willing to sign a two-year wireless service contract with AT&T can get an additional $50 mail-in rebate from AT&T.

An Overview of the MPx200

The MPx200 uses a clamshell design, with the keypad and buttons on one side and the screen on the other. Its 16-bit color display is the Smartphone standard of 176 by 220 pixels. This is not a touchscreen; a cursor is controlled with a D-pad on the bottom half of the device.

This handset runs Microsoft's Smartphone 2002 on a 200 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor. It includes 32 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM. In addition, 10 MB of the ROM is available to the users for additional storage.

This is a GSM/GPRS device and operates on 1800/1900 MHz. As a smart phone, it gives users the ability to access email and the Web, make phone calls, play games, and run other types of applications.

It has an SD/MMC slot that supports SDIO, meaning it is able to use accessories that plug into the SD slot besides just memory cards. It also has a mini USB connection and an IrDA port. Unlike many recent smart phones, it won't include a built-in camera.

The MPx200 is relatively small at 3.5 inches tall, 1.9 inches wide, and 1.1 inches thick (89 x 48 x 27 mm). It weighs 4.0 ounces (113g).

It includes an 850 mAh Li-Ion battery, which AT&T says will allow up to 3.4 hours of talk time and up to 70 hours on standby.
