Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., best known by its Panasonic brand name products, has announced at CeBIT that it will introduce in a few months a 1 GB SecureDigital memory card.

With a gigabyte of space, consumers will be able to store up to 30 hours of digitally compressed music, over five hours of MPEG-4 compressed video, or more than 1,000 high-resolution digital images.

The product launch is scheduled for April in the Japanese market, followed by distribution elsewhere in the world starting in May. The manufacturer's suggested retail prices will be $499.99 in the United States and 499 euros in Germany.

This won't be the first 1 GB SD card to hit store shelves. SanDisk began offering one this winter. It also has a suggested retail price of $499.99 but can be found for much less on the Web.

SD memory card slots can be found on most Pocket PCs, and also handhelds from palmOne.
