MiTAC Preparing Another GPS-Enabled Pocket PC
The Bluetooth Qualification Program has given its approval for MiTAC to release its first Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PC with a built-in GPS receiver.
Details on this device are very sketchy at this point. Essentially all that's known is that this device will be called the Mio A201, and that it will use Bluetooth 1.2.
This device has not yet received approval from the FCC, a necessary step before it can be used in the United States.
This will not be the first Pocket PC from MiTAC. It's original model, the Mio 168, came out in 2003. Earlier this year, a version of this device with an updated operating system was released. Neither of these versions included Bluetooth.
Like its predecessor, the Mio A201 will likely have a GPS antenna located on a hinge on its back.
It is not known when this device will be released, or what it will cost.
What is the Bluetooth Qualification Program?
In order for a product to carry the Bluetooth seal, it must go through an approval process. When this has been successfully completed, the product is listed on the Bluetooth Qualification Program web site. This is somewhat similar to the process wireless devices of all kinds have to go through to get FCC approval.
