Microsoft has released a report on its most recent financial quarter. This gives an overview of the entire company but doesn't completely break down results for each of its divisions. This means that revenues for the CE/Mobility unit, which is responsible for Pocket PC among other things, are now known but not its expenses.
The Mobility group has $38 million in revenues for the quarter that ended March 31. This is a very substantial increase from the $21 million it earned in the same quarter a year ago. However, not all of this revenue comes from Pocket PC sales.
With a company as large as Microsoft, it is quite difficult to get detailed financial figures for just one product. Fortunately, the company is divided into seven business divisions, of which the CE/Mobility group is by far the smallest. However, the CE group is responsible for Pocket PC, Handheld PC, and all CE operating systems and at this point it isn't known how each of these products is contributing to this total revenue figure.
A more complete financial breakdown of the company will be available in a few weeks, which will include expenses for the CE/Mobility division. Until then, it won't be known if this division is profitable. Still, it seems unlikely. Expenses for last quarter totaled $61 million.
Overall, Microsoft had revenue of $7.84 billion for the quarter, an 8% increase over revenue for the same period in the prior year. Operating income grew 13% to $3.72 billion, or 26 cents per share.
Microsoft wasn't the only company to post quarterly financial results yesterday. Intel, which makes the XScale chips used in most handheld models, did so, too. It had revenues of $6.75 billion, close to what it had in the same quarter of 2002. Its net income was $915 million. Earnings per share were 14 cents.
