Recently, Brighthand reported that HP's upcoming Pocket PC phone, the iPAQ hw6700, had been canceled and replaced by the hw6900.

It appears that this rumor was technically correct, in the sense that the hw6700 has been renamed the hw6900.

Last summer, HP accidentally leaked many of the details on this iPAQ, but the French site mobinaute has some additional information.

It has been known for some time that this model will greatly resemble one already being offered by HP, the hw6500, but offering some features not included in the hw6500, like Wi-Fi and the latest version of Windows Mobile. It will, however, lose a memory card slot, so it will support only miniSD cards.

New Details

Previously, it was thought this Pocket PC would have a 312 MHz processor. According to the latest rumors, this has been bumped up to 416 MHz.

The hw6900 will also supposedly include Microsoft's upcoming Application Kit Update (AKU) 2.0, which will include a number of improvements for Windows Mobile 5.0.

For example, AKU 2.0 is expected to include the software needed to allow this device to work with Microsoft's Messaging Security and Feature Pack -- its new push email system.

mobinaute is also reporting that this Pocket PC will use 802.11b, even though HP's description for the hw6700 clearly said it would use 802.11g.

Other Details on the iPAQ hw6900

The iPAQ hw6900 will have 128 MB of Flash ROM for Storage and 64 MB or RAM for currently running applications.

It will include a built-in GPS receiver and TomTom Navigator software.

There will be two versions of this model. These will be essentially identical, except for the fact that one of them, the hw6915, will have a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera, while the hw6910 will not.

It will be 4.7 inches tall, 2.8 inches wide, and 0.8 inches thick (118 mm by 71 mm by 21 mm). It will weigh 5.8 ounces (165 g).

Reportedly, the only thing holding up the iPAQ hw6900 is the release of AKU 2.0, which is currently in beta. This Pocket PC is expected to be released this quarter, though.
