Nokia N-Gage Passes the One Million Mark

Nokia has shipped one million N-Gage units worldwide since sales of this gaming-oriented smartphone started eleven months ago. This figure includes sales of both the original N-Gage and the N-Gage QD.

To have reached the one-million mark this quickly is a sign that this device is doing better than expected. For example, it took more than a year and a half for Apple to sell a million iPods.

"We're proud to have reached the one million milestone. Thanks to the enthusiastic consumer response to the N-Gage QD and our latest titles, we're confident that our success in leading the Mobile Gaming world will continue," said Ilkka Raiskinen, Nokia's Senior Vice President of Games.

"We're also proud to have signed up over 100,000 N-Gage Arena members, which shows that gamers are inspired to connect and compete with other mobile gamers from around the world," Mr. Raiskinen also said.

Second Time's the Charm

When it made this announcement, Nokia did not break down how many of each of the two versions were sold, but presumably a significant percentage comes from the N-Gage QD, which debuted earlier this year.

The original version of the N-Gage, which hit the market late in 2004, received very negative reviews and sold so poorly that Nokia rushed out a replacement without its predecessor's flaws.
