Nokia Planning New Cellular-Wireless Handheld

A Swedish newspaper says that Nokia is going to announce a new cellular-wireless handheld next month. The 9300 Communicator will be a scaled-down version of the company's already-announced 9500 Communicator.

While many of the details of the 9300 won't be available until the official unveiling September 8 in New York, a few facts about it have been revealed by Svenska Dagbladet.

The 9300 will use the same platform as the 9500: Symbian OS 7.0 with Nokia's Series 80 providing the user interface. This means both devices will be able to run the same applications.

The 9300 will have the same basic form-factor as the 9500, as well. It will be a clamshell device with a keyboard on one side and a 640-by-200-pixel display on the other.

Unlike the 9500, though, the 9300 will not have a camera or built-in Wi-Fi wireless networking. However, both devices will include GSM/GPRS.

Reducing the number of features will allow the 9300 to be smaller than the 9500.

Additional details on the 9300, like processor speed and amount of memory, will have to wait until the official announcement.

The 9500 is expected to hit the market in October, and the 9300 should arrive a month or so later.
