Opera Software has unveiled Medium-Screen Rendering (MSR), which is designed to create a user-friendly version of Web pages for handheld-sized screens.
Most Web pages are designed with personal computers in mind. Typically, the screen width on a PC is assumed to be at least 800 pixels wide. Many web browsers for handhelds with smaller resolutions therefore cannot render most Web pages as designed without introducing horizontal scrolling or totally reformatting the page. MSR readjusts Web pages to fit on other screen sizes without introducing horizontal scrolling. It identifies the Web page's content and adapts these different elements individually to fit on handheld-sized screens. Original fonts, colors, design and style are left virtually untouched.
Opera says its creation has been met with enthusiasm from the industry, and MSR has already been delivered to several vendors. Products that include MSR will be announced in the near future.
