PalmSource announced today the debut of the Palm Powered MobileWorld program, which has been created to improve the Palm OS as an operating system for smart phones and increase the number of applications being wirelessly downloaded directly to smart phones.
The Palm Powered MobileWorld program consists of two key elements. The first provides wireless service providers the opportunity to collaborate with PalmSource to integrate their feedback and requirements into the Palm OS platform development efforts.
The second element allows these service providers to work with PalmSource to create a select catalog of software titles for over-the-air (OTA) delivery to Palm Powered smart phones. As part of the program, PalmSource will test software applications for ease of over-the-air download from its new software store to Palm Powered smart mobile devices.
It was announced today that Sprint is the first partner in the Palm Powered MobileWorld program. The two companies will collaborate to provide the best wireless business solutions for customers using Sprint's Palm OS devices.
"Palm Powered MobileWorld is a key strategic initiative designed to ignite the growth of the new wireless Palm economy," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource. "We believe that this program creates a tremendous revenue-generating opportunity for mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers. Palm Powered MobileWorld also makes it easier for customers to purchase wireless Palm OS applications over-the-air from their Palm Powered smartphone, changing the whole user experience of buying and installing applications on smart mobile devices."
