Pretec Demos Bigger, Faster MMC Card

Pretec Electronics Corp. demonstrated what may be the world's first commercially available 1GB MultiMediaCard (MMC) at last week's Consumer Electronics Show.

MMC cards are typically less expensive that comparable SD cards, but they are also slower. However, Pretec's upcoming 1 GB card will have a write speed about 300% faster than the leading brand of MMC Cards on the market today.

Pretec's 1GB MMC is sampling to customers now, and will be available to the retail channels by the end of this quarter. Pricing is not yet available.

Big Plans for the Future

The Multimedia Card Association (MMCA) is expected to announce soon the MMC 4 standard. Cards using this standard will be up to 800% faster than ones using the current version of MMC.

The new generation of Pretec MMC 4.0 card will have dual voltage feature (3V/1.8V) and the transfer speed is expected to be at least 200% faster than the highest speed of any SD card today. Engineering samples are scheduled to be demonstrated by the middle of this year.

More About MMC

The MMC standard is open and membership-driven. There are no royalties, and the specifications are easily available. MMC Cards are compatible with most Secure Digital (SD) slots used by handhelds, mobile phones, digital cameras, and other electronics. In fact, some devices have only MMC slots, which means they don't have to pay the extra cost of adding SD support.
