According to a statement released by NTP Software, a U.S. District Court judge in Virginia has ordered Research In Motion (RIM) to pay NTP an additional $8.9 million in damages for infringing on NTP's wireless email patents.
On top of this, the maker of the BlackBerry line has to pay NTP a royalty of 8.6% on every wireless handheld it sells. It also has to pick up 80% of NTP's legal costs, or about $5 million.
The judge in the case will rule in the next few weeks on NTP's request to block future sales of the BlackBerry in the U.S.
The lawsuit between RIM and NTP stems from a dispute over eight patents held by NTP that relate to wireless email processing. NTP contends that RIM's BlackBerry devices infringe on those patents and filed suit in November 2001, seeking to prevent RIM from selling the device. Last November, a U.S. jury found in NTP's favor and awarded $23.1 million in damages. RIM filed an appeal. In February, the judge in the case ordered RIM and NTP to begin mediation.
