A Chinese wireless service provider announced earlier this week that it will soon begin carrying a new cellular-wireless Pocket PC designed by Daxian Telecom. Reportedly, this device will also be available in the U.S. from Sprint later this year.
The CU928 uses a traditional tablet design, plus it sports a small QWERTY keyboard that is exposed when the 3.5-inch, QVGA screen slides up.
With the keyboard hidden, this handheld will be 4.9 inches tall, 2.75 inches wide, and 0.75 inches thick (12.5 cm by 7.0 cm by 1.9 cm). It will weigh 7.4 ounces (210 g).
The CU928 will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 on a 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA263 processor. It will include 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM. It will have an SD slot for additional storage.
Like a lot of cellular-wireless handhelds, the CU928 will include a built-in 0.3 megapixel camera capable of taking VGA pictures.
This is a CDMA device, a necessity if it's going to be available from Sprint. The CU928 will offer both voice and high-speed data. It even supports CDMA2000, which allows data transfers at up to 2 Mbps.
In China, the companies are emphasizing this device's ability to do video conferencing and video streaming over its high-speed wireless connection.
This Pocket PC will also include Bluetooth, so wireless headsets can be used with it.
A high-capacity battery is a necessity on any wireless device. Daxian says the CU928's 1490 mAh battery will give it 3 to 4 hours talk time or 168 hours of standby time.
Smart Assets is reporting being told by a Sprint representative that the CU928 will be available from his company around the middle of this year. The price wasn't given.
Sprint already offers several converged devices like this one, including the Treo 600 and the Hitachi G1000.
More information about the CU928 is available on the Daxian Telecom web site.
