The past week has been full of rumors about upcoming smart phones from Motorola. The company is expected to release three new devices running Windows Mobile this year. Now, even more information has emerged about two of these, the MPx220 and MPx100.

MPx220

CoolSmartPhone was able to obtain a partial description of MPx220, which brings to light new information about this model.

MPx220 Earlier rumors had indicated that this device would sport a 0.3 megapixel camera. According to this latest information, this will actually be a 1.3 megapixel camera, which will be able to take significantly better pictures. This will also include a flash, something almost unheard of in a smart phone. In addition, the camera will include a 3x zoom and a timer.

Previously it was thought that this device would have an SD slot. Reportedly, it will instead have a miniSD slot. This format was introduced last year and was designed primarily for smart phones, where the size constraints are even more stringent than they are in handhelds. miniSD cards can be used in regular SD slots with an adapter, but regular SD cards can't fit in a miniSD slot.

The MPx220 will be the replacement for the MPx200, which is currently available.

It has been known for some time that this smart phone will have a clamshell design, with a screen on one side and a thumbpad, buttons, and keypad on the other. The main screen, like all handsets running this operating system, will be have a resolution of 176 by 220 pixels. On the outside will be a small screen with a clock and some phone-related information.

In addition, the MPx220 will have Bluetooth and 32 MB of RAM. This model will run Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone, while the current one uses Smartphone 2002.

Physically, it will be 3.5 inches by 1.9 by 1.1 inches (89 mm by 48 mm by 27mm) when closed and weigh 4 ounces (113 g).

Until recently, it was believed that the MPx220 would be released near the end of the first quarter of this year. Earlier this month, however, DigiTimes reported that this model won't be available until June.

MPx100

MPx100 CoolSmartPhone was also able to get the first pictures of the MPx100. This is expected to be a low-cost device; the sort of thing carriers are willing to give away with a 1-year service contract.

The pictures show a handset that uses the traditional "candybar" form-factor. It is expected to run Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone and all devices that use this operating system have a screen resolution of 176 by 220 pixels. Directly below the screen is a small D-pad, necessary because Windows powered smart phones don't use touchscreens.

On the left side is what appears to be an SD slot. This is no surprise, as all handsets running this operating system are required to have some kind of memory card slot.

At this point, no other information is available about the MPx100.

It's possible that Motorola will unveil both these models at next week's 3GSM World Congress 2004, along with the third device in this series, the MPx300.
