Currently, Sony Ericsson's top of the line smartphone is the P900, which it released last fall. The first details have leaked out about the successor to this model.
According to MobileBurn, this device's official name isn't known yet, only its code-name: Layla.
If the rumored information is correct, this won't be a complete redesign of the P900. The major change will be the inclusion of a small thumb keyboard. The P900 has a numberpad which flips down to expose the bottom part of the screen. On Layla, one side of this will have a numberpad, while the other will have a QWERTY keyboard.
The P900's numberpad is removable and there have been rumors that Sony Ericsson will release a small keypad for this model, too.
Reportedly, Layla will offer support for RIM's BlackBerry email service, something an increasing number of companies are including with their wireless devices.
Apparently, Sony Ericsson isn't going to improve the built-in camera in the device. Layla is supposed to have the same VGA camera the P900 does.
Not much else is known for sure about this device, but a few educated guesses can be made. Like its predecessor, Layla will surely run the Symbian OS and include the UIQ user interface. It will probably have a 208-by-320-pixel screen and a Memory Stick Duo slot. It is almost certain it will use GSM/GPRS wireless networks and offer Bluetooth.
If MobileBurn's information is correct, this cellular-wireless handheld will be announced during the third quarter of this year.
