Rumors have been circulating for months that palmOne will release an updated version of its popular Treo 600 smartphone in the near future. According to new information, this won't happen until this fall.

Last month, an industry analyst mentioned the Treo 610 in a research note, giving the first hard evidence of the existence of this model.

Today, the Chinese-language Commercial Times reported that Taiwan-based High Tech Computer (HTC) is likely to get the contract to produce an upgraded version of the Treo 600. According to DigiTimes, shipments of this model aren't expected to begin until September. It seems likely that what HTC will be producing is the Treo 610.

HTC is a Taiwan-based company that develops and manufactures products, including handhelds and smartphones, for other companies.

More about the Treo 610

Despite all the rumors, or perhaps because of them, little is known for certain about the Treo 610.

Some sources say this model will have a high-resolution screen and others say it won't. It has been reported that this device will have Bluetooth, but other sources deny this. There has even been talk of palmOne releasing a version of the Treo 600 without a built-in camera.

About the only things most rumors agree on is that this upcoming smartphone will offer more memory and keep the same form factor as the present model.

Whether palmOne releases the Treo 610 this fall or not, there are definitely going to be new Treo models coming eventually. palmOne CEO Todd Bradley said a few months ago that his company intends to release a whole range of smart phones, from entry-level models to high-end ones.
