RumorMill™: First Picture of xda II Pocket PC Phone

Earlier this month, O2 announced a replacement for the xda, its wireless handheld that runs the Pocket PC Phone Edition. Now, MSMobiles.com has what it claims is a picture of this device. There is a slightly better version of the same image at XScale.de.

The xda II will offer numerous features not in the original version, like a built-in 640x480 pixel digital camera. It will also have Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.

The MSMobiles.com picture doesn't show the device in very much detail, but it does show that it will be physically similar to the current one. However, the xda II apparently doesn't need an external antenna. The lens for the camera is in the middle of the back.

The new device will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC on a 400 MHz Intel Xscale processor. It will have 64MB of RAM and an SD slot.

The xda II will run on GSM/GPRS wireless networks. It will be a triband device, capable of being used worldwide. Like its predecessor, it will offer both voice and data capabilities and have full multimedia messaging. Users will be able to make and receive calls while online.

Though it gave no specifics, O2 says the new model will offer improved talk and standby time when compared with the current version.

The xda II will be available in the UK, Germany and Ireland before Christmas 2003. The xda is offered in the U.S. as the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone. It is not yet known if T-Mobile will also offer the xda II.
