Some of the most hotly anticipated devices of 2004 are HP's iPAQ h6000 series. Though HP has yet to formally announce these, rumors have been circulating for months. Recently, an analyst for Gartner leaked a preview of this device at the Consumer Electronics Show.
A reporter from Geek.com says he attended a presentation put on by Todd Kort from Gartner Dataquest. During this session, Mr. Kort said that the iPAQ 63xx is on HP's list of upcoming devices. He went on to that that this model will have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPRS, all built-in.
The analyst from Gartner did not say when this model will be released or at what price.
Update: A new rumor gives additional information about the iPAQ h6300 series. You can read all the details, including what is supposed to be a picture, in this article.
The information available on this model isn't all based on rumors. Last summer, an HP executive said his company will be releasing a new iPAQ model with include not only mobile phone functionality but also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. He did not divulge any other details.
Since that announcement, rumors giving additional details of this model have emerged. Supposedly, the HP iPAQ h6000 series will be a Quad-Band GSM/GPRS Class 10 device, meaning it could be used in the U.S., Europe, and almost every other country.
As it will be a handheld with a built-in mobile phone, it will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. This handheld will reportedly have 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM.
If these rumors are correct, the h6000 series will include a 3.5 inch transflective screen capable of displaying 16-bit color. It will also have a built-in camera with a maximum picture resolution of 640 by 480 pixels (VGA).
This Pocket PC will be about the same size as an iPAQ h2215. It will have an SDIO-capable SD slot and a flip cover. Because a powerful battery is necessary for any wireless handheld, the h6000 series will sport a 1850 mAh swappable one.
Supposedly, the iPAQ h6000 series will be released in March. A web store began taking pre-orders for this device back in December, but has since stopped doing so.
It's possible this device will be based on a design by Texas Instruments. Last year, TI announced it had created a reference design for a handheld that included Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GSM/GPRS in a single device. Code named WANDA for Wireless Any Network Digital Assistant, handhelds based on this design would be powered by TI's OMAP processors.
It has been widely speculated but not confirmed that the h6000 series will be based on the WANDA reference design. This wouldn't be the first time HP based a handheld on a TI processor. The Jornada 928 WDA also uses an OMAP chip.
