Two months ago, a Taiwanese news site revealed that Motorola has three smart phones up its sleeve: the MPx100, the MPx220, and the MPx300. While a great deal of information has leaked out about the MPx220, almost nothing has been revealed about the other two. Until today.
CoolSmartPhone.com and MobilMania.cz, and have come up with what are supposedly leaked pictures of the MPx300. These show that that this device will be no ordinary smart phone.
The other two models in the MPx series use Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone. The MPx300 will apparently run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. This means it will have a larger display that uses a touch screen and a stylus.
Though there are plenty of smart phones with clamshell designs, the MPx300 will be something new. It has a pair of hinges that allow it to open in either of two directions. Therefore the screen can be used in either portrait or landscape mode. On the other side of the clamshell is a keyboard, which has been designed to be used when the screen is in landscape mode.
Update: pocketpc italia.com has a much better picture of the MPx300 while in landscape mode, which can be found here. The site goes on to speculate that this device will use multiple forms of wireless networking, including GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi (802.11b).
How Motorola has added portrait and landscape support to Windows Mobile is not yet known. It may have hacked the current version of this operating system, or this device might run Windows Mobile 2004, which will reportedly offer portrait and landscape switching.
Judging from the pictures, the MPx300 will also have a small screen on the outside that gives the time and phone-related information. It clearly includes an SD slot and built-in camera, as most high-end smart phones do.
It's possible Motorola will announce the MPx300 at next week's 3GSM World Congress 2004. Exactly when this model will be on the market is not yet known.
