Hack Allows All Apps to Run in VGA on Toshiba e805

A third-party developer has released a system hack that allows all applications to run in VGA mode on the new Toshiba e805, not just a few applications.

The e805 has a 4-inch VGA screen, making it the first Pocket PC to offer this resolution. However, out of the box, only a few applications can take advantage of the screen's full resolution. According to its developer, RESFIX 1.0a "allows everything to run in VGA mode." It also provides a large on-screen keyboard.

There has been a great deal of discussion about this system hack in the Brighthand Toshiba e805 Forum and most people seem quite happy with it. The first version caused problems with the device's Wi-Fi function but the latest version of the hack does not.

However, installing this software isn't a simple operation. The developer, who is known as deez, recommends that people do a hard reset before installing his hack, then re-install each application individually.

RESFIX 1.0a is available for free and can be downloaded from the developer's web site.

While the e805 is the first Pocket PC to include a VGA screen, it almost certainly soon won't the only one. It was revealed last month that Microsoft intends to add VGA support to the next version of Windows Mobile.

More About the Toshiba e805

The e805 was released by Toshiba on October 23. It runs Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Premium Edition on a 400 MHz Intel Xscale PXA263 processor. It offers 128 MB of RAM, 32 MB of ROM, and 32 MB of NAND Flash ROM for extra storage.

It has integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking and dual slots: CompactFlash Type II and SD/MMC. It comes with a swappable 1320 mAh battery, and an optional 2640 mAh one is available.

This device is 5.3 inches high, 3.0 inches wide and 0.6 inches thick (135 mm by 75 mm by 15 mm) and weighs 6.8 ounces (193g ). It has a new look, but doesn't include a flipcover.

Toshiba's suggested price for the Wi-Fi version of the e805 is $599. It's on sale now at the Shop Toshiba web site.
