SDIO Now! Program Gains New Members

While several Pocket PC models have SDIO support, this doesn't mean they can use all SDIO peripherals. Software drivers must be written. To simplify this process, BSQUARE Corporation created the SDIO Now! program. Handhelds and peripherals that are part of the program are guaranteed to be interoperable, without additional drivers being necessary.

"BSQUARE's SDIO Now! program has quickened the pace of adoption of Secure Digital technology because it helps ensure interoperability across various products from different vendors," said Howard Gefen, director for the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft.

Samsung's i700 and HP's iPAQ 39xx series both support SDIO Now! In addition, the Wi-Fi SD cards coming soon from Socket Communications are part of the program. Other licensees include Veo, MARGI, and many more.

New licensees just announced include Seiko Instruments and Toshiba. The Bluetooth SD card from Toshiba is now part of the program.

About SDIO

By default, SD slots can handle memory cards. There is also a standard, called SDIO, that has been created to allow these slots to handle other types of cards. This includes wireless networking cards, digital cameras, presentation tools, and more.

Until recently, SDIO support was almost inconsequential, as very few SDIO peripherals were on the market. But several companies have recently announced plans to release SDIO wireless networking cards, which has greatly increased public interest in the standard.
