SD GPS Receiver Coming Soon

Details are still sketchy but a release from BSQUARE says that Matsushita is close to releasing a GPS receiver that connects to a handheld through the SD slot.

Prototype This GPS receiver will be part of BSQUARE's SDIO Now! program, which seeks to simplify the process of making peripherals compatible with Pocket PCs. Handhelds and peripherals that are part of the program are guaranteed to be interoperable, without separate drivers for each handheld model being necessary.

The release only mentions a Pocket PC version, but it was emphasizing the advantages of BSQUARE's program for that platform, so it was unlikely to mention a Palm OS one in any case. A release date and price also weren't given. More details will have to wait until Matsushita's official announcement of the product.

Matsushita originally announced plans to release this device in March of last year. At that time, it showed off a prototype.

While this will be the first SDIO GPS receiver, there are several available for Pocket PCs that use the CompactFlash slot.

Matsushita is a huge Japanese company that markets its products in the U.S. under the Panasonic brand name.
