Samsung Electronics has announced a 667 MHz mobile processor. This makes it the fastest chip available for future handhelds and smartphones.
At 667 MHz, this processor beats out the Intel XScale PXA270, which is available at 624 MHz.
The new Samsung processor includes all the computing characteristics of current mobile CPUs, with an embedded vector floating point co-processor enabling simultaneously computing of irregular decimal points along with fixed numbers. Design engineers implementing this technology will see enhanced graphics, 3D gaming, and digital audio features.
To further support seamless real time video images and high-density multimedia services, this processor carries up to 64 KB of cache memory.
Samsung didn't announce the names of any companies have definite plans to incorporate this processor into upcoming products. This is an ARM core-based chip, so it could be used in either Windows Mobile or Palm OS products.
Samsung's mobile CPUs are included in many products, including the new iPAQ rx3000 series.
