Sidekick II Now Available from T-Mobile

T-Mobile is now offering the Sidekick II, the latest version of Danger Inc.'s cellular-wireless handheld. T-Mobile is the first carrier to offer this device.

The Sidekick II is similar to its predecessor, but there have been some changes, most of which are external. They include a smaller form factor and a built-in camera.

Like the original Sidekick, the new model's color screen pivots aside to reveal a miniature keyboard. Around the keyboard, though, Danger has added some new buttons and moved the Directional Pad out from under the screen.

Unlike the first Sidekick, the next-generation model has a camera built into its back. It also includes a flash.

Like its predecessor, the Sidekick II has a 240-by-160-pixel screen. Both have the same amount of memory and the same processor.

Both versions of the Sidekick have roughly the same length and width, but the latest model is about one-quarter thinner. It is 5.1 inches wide, 2.6 inches high, and 0.9 inches thick. It weighs 7.0 ounces.

Desktop Synchronization, at Last

Along with the launch of the Sidekick II, T-Mobile and Danger are introducing software that allows customers to wirelessly synchronize their desktop contacts and calendar information with their Sidekick.

The Sidekick II offers Web surfing, email, instant messaging, and a mobile phone. Unlike its predecessors, the new version will have a speakerphone.

It uses GSM/GPRS networks, allowing it to access the Internet at up to 144 kbps under ideal conditions. In addition, it has a calendar, address book, and to do list. Users can wirelessly install additional applications.

The Sidekick II is available through T-Mobile for $250, after a $50 web-only rebate.
