Skype Technologies has launched Skype for Pocket PC Version 1.0, which allows users to make Skype voice calls for free using Wi-Fi wireless networking.
As well as calling other Pocket PCs, this application allows voice calls to other Skype users running Skype for Windows, Skype for Linux, or Skype for Mac OS X.
It also supports the SkypeOut service, offering global calling to any traditional telephone number at local rates. The service allows Skype users to prepay and use their computing device and Internet connection to call landlines and mobile phones anywhere in the world. SkypeOut Global Rate pricing is approximately 2 cents per minute.
Additional features include Skype conference calling, instant messaging, contact lists, and access to the Global Decentralized Directory.
Skype for Pocket PC can also be used with a GPRS connection if a Wi-Fi connection is not available, though bandwidth restrictions currently prevent the voice calling feature from being used. It is still possible to use instant messaging, however.
A Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC with a 400 MHz processor is required. It is necessary to be a registered Skype user, which can currently only be done using the regular Skype Windows version.
Skype for Pocket PC is freely available from the Skype web site.
Obviously, this isn't the first Voice Over IP (VoIP) Pocket PC application. Similar products are offered by Xten Networks, Pocket Presence, and others.
