Sony Ericsson Denies It's Considering Palm OS

Sony Ericsson says it has no plans to start using the Palm OS on its smart phones.

Earlier this week, David Nagel, the CEO of PalmSource, mentioned in an interview with Dow Jones that his company is in talks with Sony Ericsson, which raised the possibility that the mobile phone maker may be considering switching to the Palm OS.

Today, a spokesperson for Sony Ericsson told Dow Jones that his company is committed to the Symbian OS and has no plans to switch.

The confusion is probably caused by different interpretations of the word "talks". PalmSource has almost certainly proposed to Sony Ericsson the idea of switching its operating system. However, the European mobile phone maker isn't in favor of the idea and so formal negotiations aren't going on.

If PalmSource could get Sony Ericsson to switch to the Palm OS, it would be a significant milestone in its goal to increase the number of Palm OS smart phones sold in Europe.
