Symbol Introduces Enterprise-Class Handhelds

Symbol Technologies has introduced the first in a new family of what it calls enterprise digital assistants (EDA).

Targeting the growing mobile enterprise market, the new Symbol MC50 was created for employees who are not working at a desk or stationary location and need real-time access to people and information while they are on the move. It is designed for in-facility, real-time communication, data capture and VoIP telephony.

While the same can be said of a lot of other handhelds, the MC50 offers one feature they don't: it can survive a three-foot drop onto a carpeted floor.

This handheld is equipped with integrated wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) connectivity and data capture options, including 1D and 2D barcode scanning and image capture.

Some examples of employees who would use the MC50 include a retail manager on a sales floor, who would manage pricing, availability and other real-time retail management applications; IT managers who oversee the maintenance of server farms, network operation centers, or data Storage facilities; and supply chain management professionals needing real-time interaction with enterprise systems.

"Symbol developed the MC50 enterprise digital assistant with a combination of integrated features and technologies for mobile executives and managers to make quick, real-time decisions," said Chester Pribonic, vice president and general manager of mobile computing, Symbol Technologies.

The Symbol MC50 is available in a version with a built-in keyboard, and one without.

It includes Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition on a 520 MHz processor. It has 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM

The MC50 includes integrated Wi-Fi networking. It also has an SD slot with protective cover.

The standard version is 4.8 inches tall, 3.0 inches wide, and .9 inches thick. The version with a keyboard is 0.6 inches taller. Other options, like barcode scanners, increase the size.
