Tactile Touch Panels Coming to Sony Handhelds

Touch screens have been a part of handhelds since the beginning. Now, Sony engineers have developed a new type of touch panel that has the potential to revolutionize future handhelds. These panels give a tactile sensation, so when a user touches the screen it can feel like a button is being pushed, even though the user is simply pushing on a flat surface.

According to Asia Times Online, the panels create this sensation by making a quartz material vibrate by applying voltage to it, called the piezo effect. Sony's breakthrough came in achieving the piezo effect at very low voltages.

The first Sony products using the new tactile touch screens could be on the market as early as the end of this year.
