Handspring Treo 600 Gets FCC Approval

The FCC has given its approval for Handspring to release both the CDMA and GSM/GPRS versions of the Treo 600 smart phone. These are expected to be available from wireless service providers in the U.S. and Europe this fall.

As Handspring made an official announcement of this device in June, the files included in the FCC filing gives little new information. However, they do show the difference between the GSM/GPRS version (at left) and the CDMA version that is going to be offered by Sprint (at right).

Handspring had already said these would be slightly different, noting that the GSM/GPRS version will weigh 5.9 ounces and the CDMA one just over six ounces. In addition, the casings are different colors and appear to have a slightly different shape.

Nevertheless, both version offer the same general features: they will run Palm OS 5 and include a digital camera and an SD slot.

In addition, the FCC filing includes a picture of this smart phone in a carrying case, which presumably will ship with the device. This has an integrated belt clip. Also shown in this picture is the headset to allow the Treo 600 can be used hands free.

Overview of the Treo 600

The Treo 600 is the first model of an almost complete redesign of the Treo line. The most important changes include the move to Palm OS 5 and the addition of a digital camera and an SD slot. As a smart phone, it will combine the features of a wireless handheld and a mobile phone.

The Treo 600 will run Palm OS 5.2.1 on a 144 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor. It will have 32 MB of RAM, of which 22 MB to 25 MB will be available to the user, depending on the set-up chosen by the wireless providers that will be offering it.

Like previous Treo models it will include an integrated mini keyboard, though this one will be even smaller. It will have a 160-by-160 pixel color screen. the Treo 600 will be 4.41 by 2.36 by .87 inches.

It is expected to cost between $400 and $500.
