In November of last year, a Dell executive said his company was developing a Pocket PC that will offer both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in. In April, Dell announced that it was working with Good Technologies to create a handheld that can connect to 2.5G wireless networks. Now the company says it will release a model that can do all these things.
Anthony Bonadero, Dell's director of wireless product marketing, told InfoWorld that an upcoming member of the Axim Line will probably offer 802.11g, which is faster than 802.11b while being backwards compatible. It will also offer Bluetooth short-range wireless networking.
In addition, it will be able to connect to GSM/GPRS networks for voice and data. Dell says the device might also support CDMA.
Because Dell is working with Good Technologies, this Axim model will be able to access GoodLink email server software.
The model is expected to be released next year. It is not yet known what it will cost.
According to News.com, Dell still plans to offer an Axim with integrated 802.11b by the end of this year.
InfoWorld is also reporting that Dell will probably release a mobile phone running Microsoft's Smartphone operating system. However, his company isn't satisfied with the first generation of this operating system and will wait until later versions to release a product using it.
