Treo 700 Will Only Be Available from Verizon for Many Months

In the wake of the release of Palm's first Windows Mobile device, many people are wondering when it will be available from their preferred wireless carrier, or even in their home country.

As it stands now, this smartphone is offered only by Verizon, a U.S. company that uses the CDMA standard.

By this point, potential customers should be aware that Palm's CEO has made it very clear that a similar Treo model with support for GSM/GPRS networks will not be available earlier than the second half of 2006.

Still, some people are hoping that Sprint -- another CDMA carrier in the U.S. -- will offer a version of the Treo 700 before then.

It has recently become clear that this won't happen.

In a interview with a Palm representative, Brighthand was explicitly told that no carrier other than Verizon will offer the Treo 700 before this summer.

More About the Windows Mobile Treo

The 700w has a shape close to Palm's other recent smartphones, but not identical.

It has 25 MB of RAM available to the user. It also includes 62 MB of built-in, user-accessible storage, and an SD card slot that allows even more files and applications to be stored.

Although it runs Windows Mobile, Palm has been allowed to add tweaks to this platform that no other cellular-wireless Pocket PC can offer.

This model has Bluetooth 1.2 short-range wireless networking, but not built-in Wi-Fi. Still, users have option of using a Wi-Fi SD card. Palm itself lists one of these that's definitely compatible on its online store.

This Pocket PC has a 240-by-240-pixel touchscreen,. This is well below the screen resolution of the Palm OS version of this smartphone.

The Treo 700w has a 1.3 megapixel camera, allowing it to take 1280-by-1024-pixel pictures.
