WebLink Wireless and HuneTec Use Palm OS 5 to Take on Blackberry

WebLink Wireless demonstrated at this week's CTIA Wireless 2003 a handheld that uses Palm OS 5 and runs on the ReFLEX wireless network.

The H500 has been designed by Korea's HuneTec. It offers a 160 by 160 pixel monochrome screen, an integrated keyboard, and 8 MB of memory. It has a slot for removable flash memory but it is not yet known what type.

While the monochrome screen is sure to be controversial, it contributes to this device's low price and long battery life. It is expected to sell for $250 when it is released in the U.S. in September. HuneTec says its rechargeable battery will last for up to a week.

This device appears to be an attempt to capitalize on the success of Research in Motion's BlackBerry wireless devices. Both have quite similar features, including monochrome screens, always-on connections, and built-in keyboards.

About the ReFLEX Network

The ReFLEX network is just for data, not voice, and it doesn't provide very high bandwidth. However, it does offer "always on" access, wide coverage, and strong signals that easily penetrate the walls of office buildings. It uses Internet Protocol (IP), so devices utilizing the ReFLEX network have access to email and the Internet. It is owned and operated by WebLink Wireless.
