HP is now offering the long-awaited upgrades for its iPAQ hx2000 series.

Owners of a iPAQ hx2110, hx2410, or hx2750 can upgrade their Pocket PC to Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 for $40.

To make an online purchase, visit the HP web site.

Those who purchased one of these devices since August 28 should be aware that they qualify for a free upgrade (more information).

No Upgrade for You!

Not all of HP's recent iPAQs are getting upgrades.

The company made it clear today that it doesn't intend to offer operating system upgrades for the rx3000 series nor the h6300 series.

But what might anger some is the announcement that the iPAQ hw6500 will never get a Windows Mobile 5.0, despite the fact that this smartphone debuted just a few months ago, and hasn't even been officially released in the United States yet.

Windows Mobile HP explained this by saying, "Mobile operator networks require stable product performance in order to maximize quality of service for their end-users. In some cases in order to maximize service performance with the new operating system, hardware changes are required. Hardware modifications to on the h6300 and hw6500 are not planned; therefore HP will not provide MS Windows Mobile 5.0 on the iPAQ h6300 and hw6500 models."

An upgrade will be available for the company's flagship handheld, the hx4700, but HP announced recently that this won't be available until next spring.

More information is available on the HP web site.
