Last month, HP disappointed many iPAQ users when it officially announced that there would be no Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition upgrades for any current iPAQ model. However, lots of people aren't giving up and have put their digital signatures on a petition urging HP to reverse this decision.
Sunday Anya, perhaps better known to users of the Brighthand forums as Sofene, started a petition on PetitionOnline.com in late July. Recently, the 10,000th person added their name to this, and the number of signatories continues to grow.
This petition is addressed to Carly Fiorina, chairman and CEO of Hewlett-Packard. It states, in part, "Since these iPAQ Models are still used by a large portion of the PDA community (see Brighthand Forums and other PDA Forums), we users of iPAQ H19xx, H22xx, H38xx, H39xx, H41xx, H5xxx series computing devices are requesting that Hewlett Packard offer a reasonable commercial Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC upgrade service or software package for these iPAQ series handheld computers."
This isn't the only way for iPAQ users to express their thoughts on this decision. There is a thread in HP's official support forum where many people have posted their opinions. Not surprisingly, these are overwhelmingly negative.
HP isn't the only company that has decided to forgo releasing Windows Mobile SE upgrades. There will also be no upgrades for Axim X5 or Axim X3 models from Dell.
Many Axim users are doing their part to make sure Dell is aware that there is demand for an update. An online petition has been going for several months and, so far, over 3,000 people have signed it.
