Toshiba Europe has posted on its web site something many handheld users have been eagerly waiting for: a Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition update for the e800/e805.
Available on the site are updates for both the version of this handheld with Bluetooth and the one with built-in Wi-Fi.
The necessary files can be found on this company's support web site. Toshiba isn't charging for this update.
Reportedly, the operating system update process is somewhat complex, and anyone attempting it is urged to follow the supplied directions carefully.
A Windows Mobile SE update for the e405 is expected from Toshiba in June.
Windows Mobile SE includes some significant enhancements.
This operating system update has built-in support for VGA screens, which the e800 has. However, Windows Mobile SE will make this much more robust.
In addition, the new version of the operating system adds the ability to easily switch the screen orientation between portrait and landscape.
Toshiba soon won't be the only company with a VGA Pocket PC. HP, Dell, ASUS, and Fujitsu-Siemens are all expected to release models with screens at this resolution in the coming months.
