In 2001, a class action lawsuit was filed claiming that some Palm handhelds available at that time could damage the motherboards of PCs with static electricity. This case has just been settled.
The lawsuit charged that some Palm III series and both Palm V series models could built up static electricity while they were being used, which would then transfer to a PC when the handheld was placed in its cradle, resulting in damage to the PC.
As part of the settlement, palmOne didn't have to admit its products were defective, but it did agree to pay the members of the class either $200 in cash or give them an $20 to $80 credit towards any current palmOne product. The amount depends on how much proof each person has that a Palm handheld was responsible for damaging their PC's serial port, according to the Associated Press.
There were only 1,500 people involved in this class action suit, about half of whom have enough proof to receive reimbursement of some kind.
