Top-Level Domain Created for Mobile Devices

Mobile Top Level Domain (mTLD) has announced that an Internet domain  for mobile phones will debut next month.

This top-level domain, ".mobi," will contain only web sites that have been formatted for the small screens and relatively slow connection speeds of feature phones, smartphones, and cellular-wireless handhelds.

"Many existing Internet sites are grounded in desktop PC-oriented services and were not designed with a mobile phone in mind, which has led to less than ideal performance for consumers," said Neil Edwards, CEO, mTLD Ltd. "The dotMobi sites are tailor-made for browsing and navigating on the mobile phone, making a far better experience."

mTLD is the company responsible for administering .mobi.

This domain won't launch until May 22, but temporary domain names have been issued to Newbay, Nokia, TIM, Vodafone and The Weather Channel, among others, to demonstrate how sites will look on mobile devices. A listing of these can be found at demo.mtld.mobi.

More information is available on mTLD's web site.
