Palm, Inc. is once again offering a software update for the Treo 700w that lets companies use Microsoft software to deliver 'push' email to their employees using these Windows Mobile-powered smartphones.

This update, called the Messaging & Security Feature Pack (MSFP), was first released last week, but was pulled a few days later after Palm discovered a small glitch that made it impossible for some people to install this software.

Obviously, the company now believes it has solved this problem because the MSFP has re-appeared on Palm's web site. This is a free download.

More Details on the Treo 700w Update

The most significant part of this software update for the Treo 700w is Microsoft's Messaging & Security Feature Pack (MSFP). With MSFP, companies are able to deliver 'push' email to their employees using Treo 700w smartphones wirelessly connected to their Exchange 2003 servers without the need for third-party software, hardware, or service fees.

Treo 700wTraditional email is pull email, in which a device periodically checks a server for any new messages. In push email, as soon as an incoming email arrives on the server, it is pushed out to the device, and the user is immediately notified of it.

Although much of the focus has been on MSFP's push email functions, this software update also allows this smartphone to wirelessly synchronize calendar items, contacts, and tasks with Microsoft Exchange.

In addition, it allows over-the-air lookup of a company's Exchange Global Address List (GAL), and security features for IT administrators, such as over-the-air device password policy enforcement and remote wipe of the device in case it is lost or stolen.

In addition, Palm took advantage of this ROM update to make some other changes. Treo 700w Updater 1.10 also includes enhancements for this device's image and videos application and a new wireless manager that offers an updated interface for turning wireless radios on and off.
