Palm Commits to Adding Wi-Fi to Future Treos

When many are asked what they think of Palm's Treo line of smartphones, many people say something like, "They look great, and I'd think about getting one if it had Wi-Fi."

Until now, there have been some accessories that brought this short-range wireless networking standard to various Treo models, but none of these devices had it built in.

There's good news for those who want to see this change. Palm's CEO has just committed to building Wi-Fi into future Treo models.

His statement came in an interview with the Washington Post. He went on to say, "We do believe Wi-Fi is an important technology. There's no question that we'll ultimately put [it] in our products, but at the right time."

Colligan explained that  his company hasn't added Wi-Fi to its previous smartphones because it believed it would be too big a drain on their batteries.

Not surprisingly, Colligan did not say when the first Treo with integrated Wi-Fi will debut.

Backing Up the Rumors

This is the first hard evidence to support what had previously been only a rumor.

Recently, a road-map of future phone releases leaked out of the U.S. carrier Cingular Wireless. On this was a Treo code-named Lennon that will supposedly include built-in Wi-Fi.

This GSM/GPRS smartphone will reportedly run Windows Mobile 5.0 and have support for EDGE and the even faster wireless networking standard UMTS.
