The Latest on the HTC Excalibur

Some new information  has emerged on an upcoming Windows Mobile smartphone from HTC.

According to previous rumors and leaks, this device, code-named the Excalibur, will use a design that is becoming increasingly popular: a slim tablet shape with a QWERTY keyboard below the screen.

More recently, an unnamed source has given Engadget a photo of what is supposed to be this smartphone, plus some additional details on it.

Despite it's blurriness, the image plainly shows the Excalibur running a theme from T-Mobile. This isn't surprising, as this smartphone reportedly offers built-in Wi-Fi, and T-Mobile has embraced this short-range wireless networking technology far more than most carriers have.

In addition, the source says that this model's screen will have a resolution higher than QVGA.

The best information currently available on the Excalibur indicates that it will run Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, which means it won't include a touch screen.

It will supposedly include a real innovation: a  jog strip.  Instead of pushing up and down on a jog wheel, users will run their finger up and down a touch-sensitive strip just to the right of the screen. Above and below this strip will be areas that can be touched to open the Start Menu and go Back.

This will reportedly be a quad-band GSM/GPRS device. Whether it will offer EDGE or a faster cellular-wireless networking standard is not yet known,

HTC has yet to officially announce the Excalibur, so a great deal of information about it remains unknown, like its processor speed, amount of internal storage, memory card type, and when it will be released.

Assuming this smartphone is real, it will able to compete head-to-head with similar models, like the Motorola Q, and Samsung i320.
